Steel Innovation Paves the Way
for a Sustainable Future
Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd (Masteel) is showing how heavy industry can go green without slowing down. By using Direct Casting and Direct Rolling technology, the company has removed fossil fuels from the billet heating process, cutting carbon emissions at the source.
The results are impressive. In 2024 alone, Masteel reduced its Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions by 51.2% and achieved a 33.7% drop in emissions per tonne of steel. It has invested RM57 million in carbon capture, while also implementing real-time monitoring to track its environmental impact.
But carbon is only part of the story. Masteel has introduced zero-water discharge practices, switched to low-GHG Induction Furnaces and recycles all its cooling water. It is also working with UTAR on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) research. These efforts have earned the company two Gold Awards at The Star’s ESG Positive Impact Awards 2024.
